No Waste

So much of what we consume today is “disposable.” We use it once, throw it away, and (if it doesn’t escape into the environment as litter) it gets dumped in a landfill, where it sits for hundreds of years. There is no oxygen in landfills, so nothing degrades. Garbage archaeologists report finding 100-year-old banana peels in landfills.

Food and other compostable organic materials make up about one third of the waste stream. When organic material undergoes anaerobic (no oxygen) respiration in a landfill, methane gas results and escapes into the air. Methane gas is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. In fact, methane is 23 times more effective in trapping heat than CO2.

Composting is a relatively inexpensive process that uses organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and insects, to break down organic materials aerobically (with oxygen). It is a speeded up version of what happens when Nature breaks up material. What results is a valuable, rich, earthy mulch that goes to nourish local farms and parks.

Green Event products are 100% organic, biodegradable and compostable. All of our products can be composted at home, but some of the products—like the cutlery and cold cups— degrade faster in municipal composting facilities (see the link to a list of composting cities below.)

We recommend that you purchase a roll of six Ecosafe 6400, 33-gallon bags (also compostable). To clean up after your own “zero waste” event, simply put everything - food, dishes, napkins, cutlery, and cups - in the Ecosafe bags and then into your green waste 'Compost' bin.
